HYATT HOTELS: First Andaz brand hotel for Australia’s Gold Coast
The first Andaz-branded Hyatt Hotel on the Gold Coast in Australia is to open in 2025. It will be part of The Star Gold Coast integrated resort.

Background
The Star is an Australian casino brand that has faced some difficult challenges recently. It is accused of not meeting its legal obligations for a casino license in New South Wales. It also failed to deliver audited accounts on time. The Star has just opened a massive complex in Brisbane, Queensland. It is currently seeking to refinance a large amount of debt.
The Star casino and hotel complexes are sufficiently large and bring in enough income to state governments in taxes to qualify them as ‘too big to fail’. So, although the company is having difficulties dealing with accusations of money laundering, it will almost certainly survive these current challenges.
The Andaz brand
Hotel branding is a complex, confusing, and, to me, mystifying occupation. The description of brands is very similar to the words produced by this corporate jargon generator. Hyatt currently runs 30 Andaz-branded hotels worldwide.
Try this contradictory paragraph, and I think you will see what I mean:
‘Global in scale while local in perspective, the Andaz brand empowers self-expression and stimulates guests’ curiosity through imaginative travel for a distinctively local experience. Through thoughtful, unscripted service tailored for travelers, Andaz hotels enable guests to go beyond the familiar to discover and define their personal essence while immersing themselves in the spirit of the eclectic culture around them.’
Hyatt Press Release
Yes, I know. Enough to make anyone who loves good writing, vomit.
Andaz Gold Coast
Housed within The Star Gold Coast, the Andaz on Broadbeach Island will offer a range of dining and entertainment options. It has direct access to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre and easy access to the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre.
The hotel will occupy 15 floors of the 65-floor second tower. It will have 202 rooms and suites over the sixth to the 21st floor. Level six will house an extensive pool deck with a cocktail bar, beach club and cabanas. The design is by Australia’s DBI Architects, with interiors by Hachem using a ‘chase the sun’ theme as it traverses the Gold Coast.
2PAXfly Takeout
The Gold Coast inspires the ‘Vegas’ part of the BrisVegas slang for Brisbane, the capital of Queensland.
The Gold Coast has an enticing climate with stunning beaches. But it has also been overdeveloped with residential apartment buildings and hotels over the last 50 years. It’s the home of canal developments, property speculators, and the infamous ‘White Show Brigade’ synonymous with the corrupt conservative government of Joh Bhelke-Petersen.
Having said all of that, it is an enticing winter break destination for Australians, mainly those from the more southern states.
Surprisingly, it also lacks good hotels. That was my opinion from my last stay on the Gold Coast, maybe a decade ago. Since then, there have been refurbishments (Sofitel) and new entrants (JW Marriot and The Star Grand), so maybe that has changed.
Anyway, good to see a new entrant in that market, and the debut of the Andaz – however confusing its brand description is – to the Australian market.
