QANTAS: Direct Sydney to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea flights
From 1 April 2024, Qantas is operating direct flights between Sydney and Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea.
“These flights will meet the growing demand from the business community for travel between Australia and Papua New Guinea. Our new Sydney service will save customers at least three hours in travel time on return trip by avoiding a stopover in Brisbane.”
Cam Wallace, Qantas International CEO
The direct four-hour flights will operate twice weekly using a Qantas Boeing 737 aircraft. Here are the flight details:
- QF191 Departs Sydney 9:50 am (Monday and Friday), arrives Port Moresby 12:50 pm
- QF192 Departs Port Moresby 1:45 pm (Monday and Friday), arrives Sydney 5:40 pm
The flights are currently priced at nearly AU$5,000, rising to under AU$7,000 in June in Business Class and close to AU$900 in Economy. The direct flights are marginally less expensive than flying via Brisbane. However, the Brisbane flights run daily rather than just twice per week.
An alternate direct flight with a similar weekly schedule and at a similar price is Air Niugini also on a Boeing 737 aircraft.
Qantas started flying between Sydney and Papua New Guinea in 1950.

With all its issues and poverty, Port Moresby is not high on the tourism list for most Australians. That’s a pity since by all reports of people who have visited or lived in Papua New Guinea it has a lot to offer Australian and other tourists.
