Hi KLM, Hi Air New Zealand – Qantas new codeshares
From 1 November 2018 for travel from 8 November 2018 (subject to regulatory approval etc) Qantas will codeshare KLM daily flights between Singapore and Amsterdam.
KLM, on the other hand, will codeshare Qantas international flights between Singapore and Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
So How is this good?
Well if you are a Qantas Frequent Flyer, you can earn points and status credits when on a Qantas-coded flight between Singapore and Amsterdam. You also get KLM lounge access in Amsterdam, as well as access to Qantas lounges in Singapore and Australia. It’s also possible that there might be redemption possibilities in the near future, although this is yet to be negotiated.
More codeshares to come?
Well who knows, but this seems to be the favoured way of expanding networks for airlines these days – more popular than alliances in some ways.
Qantas has already forged codeshare agreements with Air France, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand (after its messy divorce with Virgin Australia and of course Emirates.
Can you remember when KLM actually flew to Australia?
A: looks like 1985/86 for Sydney according to Wikipedia
