
QANTAS: Flight from Auckland to Sydney lands safely after Mayday call

A Sydney-bound Qantas flight QF144 from Auckland, New Zealand, has called a mayday alert indicating engine trouble.
The twin-jet Boeing 737-800 is scheduled to land at Sydney Airport at 3.25 pm.
The term ‘Mayday’, repeated three times is used by aviators to indicate a life-threatening emergency.
Although the flight is expected to land safely, emergency services will meet the aircraft on the tarmac after it lands.

Sydney Airport has alerted Fire and Rescue, NSW Police and ambulance services.
The flight left Auckland an hour late at 2.30pm NZ time. The aircraft is capable of landing with one engine.
Flight data indicates the plane lost altitude and speed less than an hour into the 3 hour flight.
